Expect the next edition

Photomaraton is a project of FotoFabrika Fondation and is organized with the financial support of Sofia Municipality, Program Europe 2018, together with the Instituto Cervantes in Bulgaria and the Czech Cultural Center.

Photomarathon is a photographic competition where participants must produce photographs on a predefined topic in a given period of time. Only pictures made on the day of the marathon will be eligible.

The winners will be chosen the same day at the end of the competition. The topics in the previous editions were "Hell", "Close", "Once more", "Silence" and "Escape".

As elsewhere in the world, the pictures have to be submitted straight from the camera. Editing or processing are not allowed. The jury will evaluate the photographs anonymously taking into account the shooting technique and the creativity in interpreting the topic. Only entrants who finish the whole challenge will be eligible. There are over 80 such events around the world and the concept of the Photomarathon began in Madrid in 1986. This year Sofia will enter the international calendar of photomarathons for the third time.

1. PhotoMarathon Sofia is an entirely digital event. You can take part only with a digital camera (no film cameras or mobile phone cameras, this year no drones). You must provide your own memory card, which must be empty of images at the beginning of the day. This will be checked by a member of the PM team at registration on the day of the event.

2. You must capture 1 image on a given topic.

3. All photographs must be taken on the day of the PhotoMarathon event between 11am and 4pm.

4. All images must be taken on the same camera.

5. All images must be shot as JPEG files. RAW files will not be accepted.

6. You are free to use flashguns, filters (including in-camera) and tripods.

7. You are not permitted to edit the images, use any image-processing programs or use images that are not taken during PhotoMarathon. You are not permitted to amend the filename or any exif-data related to the images. Any manipulation (or suspected manipulation) of the image or its metadata will cause the entry to be disqualified. This decision will be at the discretion of the judges and/or the organizers of the event and is final.

8. Only memory cards with 1 image on them will be eligible for downloading. You are not permitted to have more than 1 image on your card at the end of the day.

9. You must collect the topic at the allotted times, in person, from the PhotoMarathon HQ, Sredets centre of culture (Krakra str. 2)

10. To cross the finish line you must return your memory card for downloading by the 4 p.m. deadline.

11. PhotoMarathon HQ will be downloading completed entries from 4.00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Can I enter with a digital camera?

Yes. PhotoMarathon is a fully digital event.

Can I use my film camera?

Unfortunately not, we're sticking with digital only.

Can I use my camera phone?

Not for this time but it's something that we'll certainly consider for future editions depending on feedback.

Do I need to bring my own memory card?

Yes, you will need to bring your own memory card. It will need to be completely blank at the beginning of the PhotoMarathon, and our team will check this before you start. We will accept standard SD cards. If yours isn't a typical SD type please bring a USB cable for us to download your images at the end of the day.

Can I use multiple cameras?

No, we accept one camera only. Feel free to use different lens, filters etc though. No drones are accepted this time, sorry.

Can I use in-camera art filters?

If it's a filter you're applying prior to taking the photo, we will accept it, but we want to avoid post-processing of any kind. Multiple exposure is allowed.

Can I enter with a friend or in a group?

Absolutely! This is an opportunity for photographers to work together, as it often helps to get the creative inspiration flowing. If you're working in a team, and submitting one portfolio between you, you do need all the images on one memory card. Use one camera, submit one card.

How do I register a team?

If you want to compete in a team, you can either use your registration as a single competitor (better send us an e-mail using your e-mail for Photomarathon registration) and "surprise us" during the registration time, or if you are aware earlier that you will be competing in a team write your team first or last names during the registration. One mail for all, guys.

Where is HQ for the event day?

We will be expecting you in Sredets centre of culture (Krakra str. 2)

How do I submit my photos?

At the end of the marathon you have to go back to the initial meeting point for the photomarathon and we will transfer the images to our computers. After that you can retrieve your SD cards.
